The Egg and Cheese Breakfast Casserole is one of the most popular breakfast dishes. This dish puts several beloved morning food items together to create a one-dish wonder, and can be made with or without meat.


9 large eggs
12 slices bread, cut into cubes (remove crusts if desired)
1 1/2 pounds ground beef or sausage
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
3 cups milk


Brown the ground beef or sausage; set aside to drain and cool on a plate covered with paper towels.
Whisk eggs together with milk; add salt, mustard, and pepper. Stir in bread cubes; add browned meat and cheese. Pour mixture into a lightly buttered 9x13x2-inch glass baking dish. Refrigerate the dish overnight. Remove from the refrigerator 30 minutes before serving. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes, or until set. Let stand for about 10 minutes, then cut into squares to serve. This recipes serves about six people, depending on the size of the squares.
